Importance to the Broader Parish/School Context
The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is crucial to teach in a school context as it is a significant healing sacrament still used within the parish today. Thus it is relevant to the schools whom adopt a parish/school approach to the teaching of Religious Education in schools, as seriously ill or aging members of their Church parish community may receive this sacrament of healing from the Parish Priest (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1993).
Through the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Catholics are called to acknowledge and pray for those whom receive the sacrament, as they are strengthened by the Holy Spirit to unite to the passion of Christ, endure suffering in a Christian manner, for the forgiveness of sins (if they have not received the sacrament of Penance), to restore their health or to prepare for 'passing over to eternal life' (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1993) thus it is important for Stage Three students to be apart of their broader parish/school context in celebrating the lives of those members of their school's Church parish.
