Why Teach this Sacrament?
The Sacrament of Anointing is an important sacrament to teach as it allows students to understand the importance of healing rituals and be closer to God, just as they did when they received the sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance.
Stage Three students are familiar with the other six sacraments, most having already received the sacrament of Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation, thus through teaching the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, students are able to distinguish between the purpose and importance of the sacraments of healing (i.e Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick) along with the other sacraments.
As the New Testament mainly addresses the healing stories of Jesus' miracles, it is also important for students to understand the significant messages behind those stories which are crucial in understanding the sacraments of healing. Hence, it will allow students to use their gained religious knowledge to become active Christians in society as they achieve those values and attitudes outcomes contained within the Religious Education Curriculum documents.
(NB: see lesson plans for practical teaching and learning experiences that address this rationale.)
